This Liberty ship was named for Daniel L. Johnston (1905-1942). Daniel L. Johnston was the Second Assistant Engineer on the American-flagged tanker SS Caddo. Johnston was lost at sea following the torpedoing of Caddo by the German U-boat U-518 on November 23, 1942.
