This Liberty ship was named for Richard Caswell (1729-1789). Richard Caswell was a soldier and politician. During the Revolutionary War Caswell was an officer in charge of North Carolina militia, rising to the rank of major general. Caswell served as a North Carolina delegate to Continental Congress, and was Governor of North Carolina from 1776-1780, and from 1785-1787.
