This Liberty ship was named for Richard D. Spaight (1758-1802). Richard Dobbs Spaight was a Founding Father of the United States and politician from North Carolina. Spaight was a North Carolina delegate to the Confederation Congress, the Governor of North Carolina from 1792-1795, and a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina from 1798-1801. Spaight attended the Constitutional Convention and signed the U.S. Constitution.
