This Liberty ship was named for Richard Montgomery (1738-1775). Richard Montgomery was a soldier and officer from Ireland. Montgomery originally served in the British Army and fought in North America during the French and Indian War, and in Pontiac's War. Montgomery served as a general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was killed at the Battle of Quebec.
