This Liberty ship was named for Robert Bacon (1860-1919). Robert Bacon was a U.S. Army officer, banker, and diplomat. Bacon served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State from 1905-1909, U.S. Secretary of State in 1909, and U.S. Ambassador to France from 1909-1912. Bacon was also a partner in J.P. Morgan & Co and an officer in the U.S. Army during World War I.
