This Liberty ship was named for William H. Welch (1850-1934). William Henry Welch was a physician and school administrator. Welch served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I, rising to the rank of brigadier general. Welch was one of the founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital and the first dean of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
