This Liberty ship was named for William L. Marcy (1786-1857). William Learned Marcy was a teacher, soldier, lawyer, politician, and statesman. Marcy was an officer in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. Marcy served as U.S. Senator from New York from 1831-1833, Governor of New York from 1833-1838, U.S. Secretary of War from 1845-1849, and U.S. Secretary of State from 1853-1857.
