This Liberty ship was named
for Cyrus Adler (1838-1900). Cyrus Adler
was an educator and Jewish leader. Adler was a professor of Semitic languages
and Johns Hopkins University. Adler was a founder of the Jewish Welfare Board,
and an editor of the Jewish Encyclopedia. President of the Dropsie College for
Hebrew and Cognate Learning from 1908-1940, and Chancellor of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America.
