This Liberty ship was named
for David F. Houston (1866-1940).
David Franklin Houston was a professor, university administrator, and cabinet
appointee. Houston served as President of Texas A&M University from
1902-1905, President of the University of Texas from 1905-1908, and as the
Chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis from 1908-1913. Houston was
the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1913-1920, and the U.S. Secretary of the
Treasury from 1920-1921.
