Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for David G. Farragut (1801-1870). David Glasgow Farragut was an officer in the U.S. Navy. Commissioned a midshipman at age nine in 1810, Farragut served in the Navy during the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and Civil War. Farragut was the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and admiral in the U.S. Navy. Farragut is also known for his success at the Battle of New Orleans and the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War.
