This Liberty ship was named
for David Gaillard (1859-1913).
David Gaillard was a soldier and engineer. Gailard graduated from West Point
and was an officer and engineer in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of major.
Gaillard was in charge of the construction of the central part of the Panama
Canal. Gaillard died of brain tumor in 1913, shortly before the Panama Canal
opened in 1914. The Culebra Cut in the Panama Canal the name Gaillard Cut from
1915-2000.
