Historical Narrative
This Liberty ship was named
for David L. Yulee (1810-1886).
David Levy Yulee was lawyer, politician, and businessman. Yulee was a Delegate
to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Territory of Florida from
1841-1845, and a U.S. Senator from Florida from 1845-1851 and 1855-1861. Yulee
was the first Jewish member of the U.S. Senate. Before and after his time in
Congress, Yulee was heavily involved in building railroads throughout Florida,
founding the Florida Railroad Company and earning the nickname "Father of
Florida Railroads."
