Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for David R. Francis (1850-1927). David Roland Francis was an American politician and diplomat. Francis was the Mayor of St. Louis, Missouri from 1885-1889, the Governor of Missouri from 1889-1893, and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1896-1897. Francis also served as the president of the Organizing Committee for the Summer Olympic Games from 1900-1904. Francis was the last U.S. ambassador to the Russian Empire prior to its collapse, serving from 1916-1917.
