This Liberty ship was named for David S. Terry (1823-1889). David Smith Terry was an American jurist. Terry served on the California State Supreme Court from 1855-1859, and was the Chief Justice of California from 1857-1859. Terry was a cavalry officer in the Confederacy during the Civil War.
