The former USS Charleston (PG-51) served as USTS Charleston, the training ship for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy during the period between 1948 and 1957.

USS Charleston (PG 51) was one of only two Erie Class Patrol gunboats originally built for US Naval service during the 1930s. Its keel was laid down at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Charleston, South Carolina on 27 October 1934. It was launched on 25 February 1936 and commissioned on 8 July 1936.
