Historical Narrative
This Liberty ship was named
for Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804).
Alexander Hamilton was soldier, lawyer, businessman, politician, and one of the
Founding Fathers of the United States. Hamilton served as officer in the
Continental Army and was an aide-de-camp to General George Washington. Hamilton
was a New York delegate to the Congress of the Confederation and signed the
U.S. Constitution. Hamilton served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from
1789-1795. Hamilton was killed in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804.
Hamilton was influential figure in the early history of the U.S., designing the
nation's financial system and leading the Federalist Party.
