Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for E. Kirby Smith (1824-1893). Edmund Kirby Smith was a U.S. Army officer and Confederate general during the Civil War. Smith was one of seven men to reach the rank of full general in the Confederate Army. After the Civil War Smith worked in the telegraph industry, and was also a university administrator and professor.
