This Liberty ship was named
for Edmund G. Ross (1826-1907).
Edmund Gibson Ross was a soldier and politician. Ross was an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War. Ross served as a U.S. Senator from Kansas from 1866-1871, and governor of New Mexico Territory from 1885-1889. As a senator Ross cast the deciding vote that prevented the 1868 impeachment of President Andrew Johnson.
