This Liberty ship was named for Alexander Martin (1740-1807). Alexander Martin was a soldier and politician. During the Revolutionary War Martin served as an officer in the North Carolina Militia. Martin was the Governor of North Carolina from 1782-1785 and from 1789-1792, and U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 1793-1799.
