Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Edward D. Baker (1811-1861). Edward Dickinson Baker was a lawyer, politician, and soldier. Baker was Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois from 1845-1847, and from 1949-1851, and a U.S. Senator from Oregon from 1860-1861. Baker served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and in the Union Army during the Civil War. Baker was killed at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in October 1861.
