This Liberty ship was named
for Edward Everett (1794-1865). Edward Everett was a pastor, professor, politician, diplomat, and university administrator. Everett was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1825-1835, Governor of Massachusetts from 1836-1840, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1841-1845, U.S. Secretary of State from 1852-1853, and a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1853-1854. Everett served as the president of Harvard University from 1846-1848. Everett is also known for being the featured speaker at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery in 1863, giving his speech immediately prior to Abraham Lincoln's more famous Gettysburg Address.
