This Liberty ship was named
for Alexander R. Shepherd
(1835-1902). Alexander Robey Shepherd was a businessman and politician.
Shepherd served as the head of the District of Columbia Board of Public Works
from 1871-1873 and Governor of the District of Columbia 1873-1874. Shepherd is
known as the "Father of Modern Washington" for his modernization and
social reform efforts in the city.
