Historical Narrative
This Liberty ship was named
for Elisha Mitchell (1793-1857). Elisha Mitchell was a minister, geologist, and educator. Mitchell was a Presbyterian minister and a professor at the University of North Carolina. Mitchell accurately measured Black Dome as the highest mountain in the Eastern U.S., and it was renamed Mount Mitchell after his measurements were later confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
