Historical Narrative

This Liberty ship was named for Ethan Allen (1737-1789). Ethan Allen was a businessman, soldier, patriot, and politician. Allen is best remembered for forming and leading the Green Mountain Boys, a militia unit that interfered with New York's claims to land known as the New Hampshire Grants (present day Vermont). During the American Revolution Allen led the Green Mountain Boys in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and a failed assault on Montreal that resulted in his capture. Allen is also known as one of the founders of the state of Vermont.

MARAD has no written history for the Liberty ship Ethan Allen at this time.
