Historical Narrative

This Liberty ship was named for Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer, politician, and the sixteenth President of the United States. Lincoln was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois from 1847-1849, and President of the U.S. from 1860-1865.  During his presidency, Lincoln led the Union to victory in the American Civil War and ended slavery in the United States before becoming the first U.S. President to be assassinated in 1865.  Most historians consider Lincoln to be one of the greatest presidents in American history.

MARAD has no written history for the Liberty ship Abraham Lincoln at this time.
