This Liberty ship was named for Anson Mills (1834-1924). Anson Mills was a soldier, Indian fighter, and land surveyor. Mills served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War and in the U.S. Army. As a land surveyor Mills laid out and named the city of El Paso, Texas.
