This Liberty ship was named for Anson P. K. Safford (1830-1891). Anson Pacely Killen Safford  was a businessman and politician. Safford served as the Governor of Arizona Territory from 1869-187. Safford was also the co-founder and developer of Tarpon Springs, Florida.
