This Liberty ship was named for Arthur St. Clair (1734-1818). Arthur St. Clair was a soldier and politician. St. Clair served as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of major general. St. Clair was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress and served as the President of the Continental Congress in 1787. St. Clair was the Governor of the Northwest Territory from 1788-1802.
