This Liberty ship was named for August Belmont (1816-1890). August Belmont was a banker, politician, and diplomat. Belmont was trained as a banker in Europe by the Rothschild banking firm. Belmont was the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1860-1872 and served as the Minister to the Netherlands 1853-1857. Belmont was also horse-breeder and racehorse owner, and is the namesake of the Belmont Stakes horse race.
