This Liberty ship was named
for Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790).
Benjamin Franklin was a Founding Father of the United States. During his
lifetime he was a prominent author, printer, scientist, inventor, statesman,
and diplomat. Franklin was a
Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed both the
Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. As a statesman and diplomat Franklin served
as U.S. Postmaster General 1775-1776, U.S. Minister to France 1778-1785, and
U.S. Minister to Sweden 1782-1783. Franklin was elected the sixth President of
Pennsylvania, serving from 1785 to 1788. Franklin died in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania on April 17, 1790.
