This Liberty ship was named for Thaddeus S. C. Lowe (1832-1913).Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe was an aeronaut, meteorologist, scientist, and inventor. Lowe used a balloon to conduct the first aerial military reconnaissance in the U.S. during the Civil War.
