This Liberty ship was named for Benjamin Williams (1754-1814). Benjamin Williams was a soldier and politician. Williams as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Williams served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina from 1793-1795, and as Governor of North Carolina from 1799-1802, and again from 1807-1808.
