This Liberty ship was named for Bernard N. Baker (1854-1918). Bernard Nadal Baker was a businessman and shipping tycoon from Maryland. Baker established and was president of Atlantic Transport Line. During World War I President Woodrow Wilson appointed Baker to the U.S. Shipping Board.
