This Liberty ship was named for Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842). Bernardo O'Higgins was a Chilean soldier and statesman. O'Higgins was a leader of the Chilean independence movement and served as a general during the Chilean War of Independence. O'Higgins was the Supreme Director of Chile from 1817-1823.
