This Liberty ship was named for William Eaton (1764-1811). William Eaton was a soldier, diplomat, and politician. Eaton served as a U.S. Army officer and  was the Consul to Tunis during the First Barbary War. Eaton led the first U.S. military victory on foreign soil at the Battle of Derna in 1805.
