Historical Narrative

This Liberty ship was named for Billy Mitchell (1879-1936). William "Billy" Mitchell was a U.S. Army general, aviator, and aviation pioneer. Mitchell developed theories about aerial warfare, regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force. Mitchell's ardent belief in the military application of aviation caused him to clash with military leadership and led to his court-martial and resignation from the Army.

MARAD has no written history for the Liberty ship Billy Mitchell at this time.
