Historical Narrative

Alcoa Banner was built by American International Shipbuilding in 1919 for the U.S. Shipping Board and was originally named Sundance.  It was later owned and operated by Alcoa Steamship Company.  In 1942 the vessel was requisitioned by the War Shipping Administration under a time charter agreement, although Alcoa Steamship Company was retained to operate the vessel.  In 1946 in Antwerp, Belgium,  Alcoa Banner was damaged by aerial bombs and declared a constructive total loss; it was later transferred to the U.S. Army, which scuttled it in 1946.
