This Liberty ship was named for Isaac Shelby (1750-1826). Isaac Shelby was a soldier and politician. As a soldier Shelby fought in Lord Dunmore's War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Shelby served as the first Governor of Kentucky from 1792-1796, and again from 1812-1816.
