This Liberty ship was named for John A. Rawlins (1831-1869). John Aaron Rawlins was a soldier and statesman. During the Civil War Rawlins served as an officer in the Union Army and was an aide-de-camp to General Ulysses S. Grant. Rawlins was the U.S. Secretary of War in 1869.
