This Liberty ship was named for Joseph S. McDonagh (1878-1944). Joseph Sylvester McDonagh was an electrician and labor union executive. McDonagh was an electrician at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. McDonagh served as secretary-treasurer of the Metal Trades Department of the American Federation of Labor , and was an official in the International Brotherhood of Electricians Union.
