This Liberty ship was named for Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906). Joseph Wheeler was a soldier and politician. Wheeler served as a Confederate general during the Civil War and as a U.S. Army general in the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War. Wheeler was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Alabama from 1881-1882, in 1883, and from 1885-1900.
