This Liberty ship was named for Rufus King (1755-1827). Rufus King was Founding Father of the United States, lawyer, politician, and diplomat. King was a Massachusetts delegate  to the Continental Congress, attendee to the Constitutional Convention, and signer of the U.S. Constitution. King served as a U.S. Senator from New York from 1789-1796 and again from 1813-1825, and U.S. Minister to Great Britain from 1796-1803 and again from 1825-1826. King was also a Federalist candidate for U.S. Vice President in 1804 and 1808, and the Federalist candidate for President of the U.S. in 1816.
