This Liberty ship was named for Samuel J. Tilden (1814-1886). Samuel Jones Tilden was a lawyer, politician, and candidate for President of the United States. Tilden served as Governor of New York from 1875-1876. Tilden was Democratic candidate for President in 1876, losing to Rutherford B. Hayes despite winning the popular vote.
