This Liberty ship was named for Timothy Pickering (1745-1829). Timothy Pickering was a soldier and politician from Massachusetts. Pickering was an officer in the Continental Army and was elected Quartermaster General. Pickering served as U.S. Postmaster General from 1791-1975, U.S. Secretary of War in 1795, U.S. Secretary of State from 1795-1800, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1803-1811, and Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1813-1817.
