This Liberty ship was named
for William J. Palmer (1836-1909).
William Jackson Palmer was a civil engineer, soldier, industrialist, and
philanthropist. Palmer served as a cavalry officer in the Union Army and
received the Medal of Honor for actions at Red Hill, Alabama in 1865. Palmer
was the co-founder of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and the founder of
the town of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
