Historical Narrative
USS Santa Elisa, a 5281 gross ton transport, was built in 1919 at Camden, New Jersey, as the civilian passenger steamship Santa Elisa. The U.S. Navy took over the ship in June 1919. Between June and mid-September, it made two round-trip voyages to bring home American service personnel from France. The ship was decommissioned in October 1919 and returned to its owners, W.R. Grace and Company. It had a long subsequent commercial career, both as S.S. Santa Elisa and, from 1936, as S.S. Baranof. The ship was scrapped in 1955.
