This Liberty ship was named for Edward Bates (1793-1869). Edward
Bates was the first Attorney General of Missouri from 1820-1821, a Member of
the U.S. House of Representatives from Missouri from 1827-1829, and U.S.
Attorney General from 1861-1864. Bates was the first U.S. Cabinet Member to be
appointed from a state west of the Mississippi River.
