Historical Narrative
This Liberty ship was named for Hobart Baker (1892-1918). Hobart "Hobey" Baker was an amateur football and hockey star, Princeton graduate, and member of the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I. Baker was killed in air crash in France in 1918. Baker was inductee to College Football Hall of Fame and Hockey Hall of Fame, and is the namesake for the Hobey Baker Award presented annually to the best collegiate hockey player.
