This Liberty ship was named for James Longstreet (1821-1904). James Longstreet was a West Point graduate and U.S. Army officer. Longstreet served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of major general and earning a reputation as one of the Confederacy's top commanders. Longstreet was the U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire from 1880-1881.
