Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Joel R. Poinsett (1779-1851). Joel Roberts Poinsett was a physician and diplomat. Poinsett served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1821-1825, U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1825-1829, and U.S. Secretary of War from 1837-1841. The poinsettia plant is named after him.
